Common Endodontic Procedures Root Canal Therapy A procedure to remove infected or damaged pulp from the inside of a tooth, clean and disinfect the space, and then fill and seal it. Steps: Diagnosis and Treatment Planning: X-rays are taken to examine the extent of the infection. Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is administered to numb the tooth. Access Opening: A small opening is made in the tooth to access the pulp chamber. Cleaning and Shaping: Infected or damaged pulp is removed, and the canals are cleaned and shaped. Filling and Sealing: The cleaned canals are filled with a biocompatible material, usually gutta-percha, and sealed. Restoration: The tooth is restored with a crown or filling to protect and restore its function. Endodontic Retreatment A second root canal treatment performed on a tooth that has not healed properly after the initial procedure. The old filling material is removed, the canals are cleaned, and the tooth is re-treated. Apicoectomy (Root-End Surgery) A surgical procedure to remove the tip of the root and surrounding infected tissue when a standard root canal treatment is insufficient to heal the infection. Pulpectomy The complete removal of the pulp from a tooth, usually performed as a precursor to root canal therapy in pediatric patients. Pulpotomy Partial removal of the pulp, usually in primary (baby) teeth, to remove infected tissue and relieve pain while preserving the remaining healthy pulp.
